Today we wanted to share our DIY spice jars. This is a project we recently completed as part of our kitchen renovation that we couldn’t help with share with you.
As part of our kitchen renovation, we created open shelving where we have all of our dry goods stored in French canning jars. Other the last several years we have been scouring every estate sale, garage sale, or antique store for these jars. We just love the look of a glass hinged jar sitting on an open shelf.
We were inspired to create a similar space for our spice jars. We eliminated a spice cabinet and now have a spice shelf. We were lucky enough to find some 4 ounce glass hinged jars that are look-alike of our favorite French canning jars. We found a set of these hinged jars, gasket and all on Amazon. We felt they were fairly reasonable as they ended up being about a dollar per jar.
We customized these jars by cutting our own vinyl lettering to affix to each jar. This wasn’t too difficult just a little time consuming. We started by writing down all of the spices we had. We then figured out how much space we had to work with on each jar before cutting the vinyl lettering.
We used a silhouette cameo 3 to cut out the white vinyl lettering. We selected a cute font that was somewhat thicker so that it would be easy to transfer onto the jars. Once the vinyl was cut, we transferred it with the use of the blue painters tapes. We feel this painters tape really works the best to transfer small vinyl lettering and words.
We’re so pleased with how they turned out that we couldn’t help but share it with you. We wanted to share it in case you might be looking for some inspiration in your own kitchen. You can customize it based on your unique style and preference.
You could use different jars or even just small ball canning
jars for the same effect. If you don’t
have a machine to cut vinyl, you could either order this lettering or you could
purchase stickers at the craft store.
You could also paint a small section or side with black chalkboard paint
and do your lettering that way. The
possibilities are endless!
If you’re looking for a cute and clever way to store your
spices, we hope you are inspired by our project. You really just need a few materials and a
few hours to create these cute little spice jars. It is really handy to have your spices on an
open shelf where they are easily and quickly accessible.
