All about Homemade Hamburger Buns
This recipe is versatile in that you can easily substitute the oil in the recipe for butter, shortening, or the oil of your choice. The other great thing is that you can easily substitute other flours to make this recipe your own. We’ve made whole wheat hamburger buns by doing half whole wheat and half all-purpose flour and they turn out awesome.
The other great thing is that you can make any size hamburger buns you need. If you want large hamburger buns, medium sized hamburger buns, or small hamburger buns. We find it works great to make a few larger buns and then the rest medium sized buns as they’re better for children or people with smaller appetites. You can easily make slider buns or sandwich/deli type rolls too.
If you’re short on time, you can also make this hamburger bun dough in your bread machine. Simply add the ingredients to your bread machine and use the dough cycle. Once the dough is complete, you’ll remove and shape the dough into your desired hamburger size. Then you’ll let them rise and bake just like the original recipe.
You can also make and freeze these hamburger buns unbaked if you want to make a batch ahead of time. You simply flash freeze your hamburger buns after you’ve shaped them into balls. Once they are frozen you can transfer them to a freezer bag where they will keep for 2 months. After this recommended time the yeast can lose its rising power. When you decide to bake them, simply let them proof in the oven, thaw overnight or at room temperature until they’ve tripled in size and ready for baking.
