Instant Pot Frozen Chicken Breasts

Today we’re sharing a recipe for Instant Pot Frozen Chicken Breasts.  This is one of the best ways to prepare frozen chicken.  Add seasonings, sauces, broth or just water with salt and pepper and the results are amazing.

We’ve all had those busy days where we don’t plan ahead and have no idea what we’re going to make for dinner.  Instead of eating out for dinner, you can throw a couple frozen chicken breasts in the instant pot and you will have cooked chicken in less than 30 minutes.

You can customize your chicken based on what you add for liquid or spices to your instant pot when you cook the chicken.  The safest bet if you’re not sure how you’re going to serve the chicken is water and to season with salt and pepper.

We cook chicken in the instant pot for tacos, sandwiches, salads, pastas, soups, quesadillas or just for dinner with barbecue sauce or some other sauce.  The chicken can be shredded or left whole when cooked in the instant pot.

Ingredients

  • 4 frozen boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup water or chicken broth
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. Place chicken breasts in the bottom of the Instant Pot (you can use the trivet if you want to but don't have to!) It's okay if their stacked, just make sure the chicken breasts aren't stuck together.

  2. Pour water or chicken broth (liquid of your choice) over the chicken and season with salt and pepper (or seasonings of your choice).

  3. Put the lid on and move the valve to sealing. Press Manual pressure and set the timer for 10-12 minutes (We've found 10 is just right, and 12 they are at 180 degrees F or more). The Instant Pot will take about 10 minutes to come to pressure and start counting down from 10.

  4. When the cook time is up, let pressure release naturally for 5-10 minutes before releasing the remaining pressure. Check that the internal temperature of the chicken is 165 degree F.

  5. Serve as is, chop, or add sauces as desired.

There is really no match for how well boneless chicken breasts come out of the instant pot, especially straight from the freezer!  In fact, we rarely take chicken out of the freezer to thaw ahead of time since the instant pot will do the work for you.

Tips for Instant Pot Frozen Chicken Breasts

The exact cook time will depend on how large the chicken breasts are, although about 10-12 minutes has always been plenty for us.  If you’re in a hurry, just add the frozen chicken and water to the pot.  That way you will have cooked chicken and can add sauces or seasonings when you prepare it.  To quickly shred chicken, add the cooked chicken to your stand mixer and it will be completely shredded within a minute or less.  This is so much more efficiently than shredding the chicken by hand.

This method of cooking frozen chicken will give you another reason to appreciate your instant pot or pressure cooker.  You will also be really thankful when you realize, you do have something up your sleeve when you were without dinner ideas.  The instant pot will save your bacon just like it has done for us many times.
