The bread machine has really been a game changer for us.  Our family enjoys fresh homemade bread but sometimes there is not enough time in the day to make bread.  After all a yeast bread from start to finish can take several hours and several steps.

By using the bread machine, we can have fresh homemade bread within a couple of hours.  You do have to plan ahead and either make this bread in the morning or earlier in the day if you want to have it with dinner.  It typically takes about 3 hours to complete in the bread machine.

What makes it the best bread machine recipe?

We typically prefer a whole wheat bread but every now and then we make this white bread.  If is our favorite homemade bread. You can’t beat a slice of this bread, still warm with some butter on it.

The bread goes great alongside any pasta, soup, or salad. It also makes the most incredible french toast. You can also use this bread to make sandwiches or just eat it by itself. It is great at room temperature, slightly warmed or even toasted.

Also when you’re busy working parents and you have picky kids. If they will eat bread then just make a loaf of homemade bread. At least you will be giving them something nourishing and you’ll know all the ingredients in the bread.

    • Hi Jennifer, we haven’t tried reducing the sugar but it would certainly be worth a try. You might not really even notice it. Some bread recipes don’t call for any sugar and in this recipe it is really to help activate the yeast. It would be worth a try to reduce the amount of sugar or use a sugar alternative especially if you were watching your sugar intake. Please let us know how your bread turns out. Happy baking!

      • Hi Donna,

We have honestly used several types of oil including; avocado oil, vegetable oil, and canola oil and this recipe has turned out great no matter which oil we used!

      • One more quick question….isn’t Instant Yeast usually added last on top of the flour in a breadmachine? I thought Active Dry Yeast was the one you added warm water and a little sugar to???

      • Hi Donna,

Active Dry Yeast or Instant Yeast is what we use in our recipe. It is our understanding that these are typically the same type of yeast and can also be called quick rise or rapid-rise. We’ve made this recipe probably close to 50 times and have always made it the same way adding the yeast first to the pan with warm water and our recipe turns out great every time. You can certainly try changing the recipe or adding the yeast on top at the end if you prefer.

    • How can I make this recipe work for a smaller machine? If I remember correctly my machine only holds 3 cups of flour?

      • Hi Rita,

Thank you for your inquiry. The easiest solution would probably be to cut this recipe and measurements in half and see if this will work for your bread machine. Please let us know how your bread turns out. Good luck baking!

        Thank you,

    • Hi Annie,

You can turn any regular flour into bread flour by simply adding 1 tsp of vital wheat gluten to each cup of flour.

    • Hi Gail,

These would absolutely be wonderful substitutions! Let us know how your bread turns out!

  • Finally made this recipe and WOW! So beautiful and delicious. You’re not kidding. This is the best white bread recipe I’ve tried. This will now be my go to. Thank you!

    • Hi Laura,

Thank you so much! I’m happy to hear that you loved it as much as we do!! Thanks again!

  • I am making this recipe for the second time. My 1st loaf was delicious, but huge! Maybe I should have made two loaves out of it. I guess my Pampered Chef stone bread pan is only for a 1lb loaf.
The bread itself was amazing! So tender and moist! Can’t wait til this batch is done, but I will make 2 loaves out of it.
Thank you for sharing this recipe; it has me using my bread machine again!

    • Hi Cheri,

This is definitely a 2lb loaf recipe. I’m so sorry if you didn’t catch that in the recipe itself, it’s at the very bottom. I’m glad to hear that the bread turned out both times but I bet that it will turn out even better if you separate it into 2 loaf pans if not baking it in the bread machine. I typically bake mine in the bread machine and my bread machine pan can make up to a 4lb loaf. Happy baking!!!

      Thank you,
      Ashley Bilyeu

      • Sounds like a great idea baking in the oven. What temperature and how long did you bake it?

      • Hi Wanda,
We’ve never actually tried baking this recipe in the oven but always baked it in our bread machine. You could definitely give it a try but you might have to experiment a little to achieve the same results. You would be safe to preheat your oven to 350 degrees and bake your bread for most likely between 30-45 minutes. We would recommend checking to see if the bread is done at 30 minutes so as not to over bake your bread. Let us know if you try and how your bread to turns out, just in case anyone else has wondered about baking it in the oven.

      • Hi Laura,

Thank you for your inquiry. We have an Oster Bread Maker, the model is the Expressbake, 2-pound loaf. We purchased it on Amazon about 4 years ago. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    • Hi Betty,

We haven’t used Kamut flour but if you can substitute in other recipes, it would be worth the try. We have heard of many people using a different kind of flour and their bread has turned out awesome. Please let us know if you give it a try and how your bread turns out. Thanks again!!

  • I made this bread tonight! I must admit I had anxiety about adding the yeast in first w the water – but hey what do I have To lose… It was so soft and yummy!! This is my fav white bread!

    • Hi Donna, we’re so happy to hear that you enjoyed this bread recipe. Thank you for trying it and for loving it! Thanks again for sharing!!!

    • Hi Kris,

Thank you for your inquiry. I haven’t tried this recipe with bread flour yet but it should turn out great. The main difference between bread flour and all purpose flour is the protein content so if you use bread flour your bread typically is more airy and chewy. That doesn’t sound like a bad thing! If you try it with this recipe, please let us know how it turns out, we would love to hear.

      Thank you,
      Ashley Bilyeu

      • The recipe says bread flour. Now I am confused. All purpose flour or bread flour?

      • Hi Julia,

This recipe does call for bread flour. It is a specific flour with a higher protein content than all-purpose flour. You can find this with the other flours in most grocery stores. You can also make your own bread flour by adding 1 teaspoon of vital wheat gluten for every cup of flour needed. Thanks for your question and good luck baking.

        Thank you,
        Ashley Bilyeu

  • I made this bread but added my yeast on top of the flour and used vital wheat gluten. Turned out great.

    • Hi Vicki,

That is great to hear. I’m so happy your bread turned out good even with the recipe changes. Thank you for sharing and keep on baking!

      Thank you,
      Ashley Bilyeu

  • My family and I love this recipe. Not only is it easy to make but it is delicious! I did substitute the avocado oil with olive oil…only because I didn’t have the avocado oil. Thank you for posting this yummy recipe.

    • Hi Ronda,

I’m so happy to hear that your bread recipe turned out and your family enjoyed it. This really is a versatile recipe because we have substituted many ingredients for things we had on hand and it still turned out excellent. Thanks for sharing!
