All about Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake

Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake starts with a base of moist chocolate sheet cake. A hot chocolate frosting then gets poured right over the warm cake.  You can even add sprinkles or more chocolate to the top cake.

We can’t imagine there are too many out there that wouldn’t enjoy this cake.  It’s truly a chocolate lovers delight. This is a family recipe and is completely homemade.  This cake has the perfect texture as it’s not too fluffy and or too dense.  It’s not too sweet with cinnamon added for an amazing taste and perfectly moist.  And the frosting is absolutely divine!

This cake comes together simply by heating butter, oil, water and cocoa powder on the stove. Next you combine these ingredients with your dry ingredients. Then you add the rest of your wet ingredients including eggs, milk and vanilla blending well.  Please make this cake by hand and not with a stand mixer. The cake crumb turns out so much better when made by hand.

Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 1/2 cup butter 1 stick
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 tsp cinnamon

For the Frosting:

  • 6 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/8 cup all-purpose flour

Instructions

For the Cake:

  1. Bring butter, oil, water, and cocoa powder to a boil on the stove.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sugar, salt and flour. Mix just until combined.

  3. Make a well in the center and add the hot chocolate liquid to the dry ingredients. Mix just until combined.

  4. Add milk, eggs, baking soda, vanilla, and cinnamon. Mix just until combined.

  5. Pour into a greased baking 9 x 13 baking pan and bake at 300 degrees for approximately 30-35 minutes or until cooked through.

  6. As the cake starts to cool, begin making the frosting.

For the Frosting:

  1. Add butter, cocoa powder, and oil to a pan on low heat.

  2. Add milk, vanilla, and flour mix well and continue to cook on low heat just to cook the flour a bit and make sure everything is combined well.

  3. Remove from heat and add the powdered sugar. Stir until combined, the frosting is completely smooth and powdered sugar is dissolved.

  4. Pour and spread over warm cake. Let cake cool before serving. Serve at room temperature or refrigerated.

How long will this Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake keep?

This chocolate cake will keep for several days covered at room temperature.  We prefer to store our cake in the refrigerator and it will keep for even longer in the refrigerator.  We’ve even heard of people making and freezing the cake but it never lasts long enough to have leftovers in our home.
