Homemade Eggnog

Today we’re sharing a recipe for homemade eggnog.  This is the perfect holiday drink to accompany your meal and takes less than 10 minutes to make.

When you think of eggnog, you wouldn’t think of a delicious holiday drink that is both quick and easy to make.  Typically what comes to mind is something that is very time consuming to make or is a very complicated recipe.  Well the truth is that you can make homemade eggnog with only 6 ingredients and about 10 minutes of cooking time.  Most prefer to chill the eggnog once it’s made which requires a little more time but not much.

Why homemade eggnog?

We have always bought eggnog from the store.  We have brands that are local here in Oregon that we have always try to support and purchased eggnog from in the past.  It wasn’t until we started reviewing the ingredients label that we realized that every single eggnog we could purchase had unhealthy ingredients such as carrageenan added to them.  In fact we couldn’t find one single eggnog at our local grocery stores that didn’t have this added them.

We have always tried to avoid products which have carrageenan added to them.  The jury is out completely on whether or not it’s that bad for you but we would encourage you to do your own research.  What we know is that carrageenan is added to foods to thicken them which we feel shouldn’t be necessary in the foods that it is added.  Therefore, we decided to embark on a journey to make our own eggnog and were surprised at how quick and easy you could make homemade eggnog.

How long will homemade eggnog keep?

Homemade eggnog will keep good for about 5 days refrigerated in an airtight container.  It never lasts that long in our house but is something to keep in mind.  It’s best to make homemade eggnog right before a holiday event or gathering to be sure that it doesn’t go to waste.

How else can you use eggnog?

There are many ways you can serve and drink eggnog.  Many people enjoy serving eggnog warmed up while others enjoy it chilled.  Some enjoy adding milk to it while others enjoy adding a little spiced rum to it.  Eggnog can be added to coffee in placed of creamer and also makes amazing French toast.  Get creative and add eggnog as an ingredient in other recipes where you would enjoy the spice and flavor of eggnog.
