Author Sunup to Sundown

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter 2 sticks
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 medium apples peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce storebought or homemade
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a 9 x 13 inch baking pan with parchment paper.

  2. In a large bowl, combine melted butter, sugars, vanilla extract and salt.

  3. Add flour and stir until crumbly. Press about two-thirds of the mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.

  4. In a separate bowl, toss sliced apples with spices. Spread apple mixture over the crust in the pan.

  5. Drizzle caramel sauce over the apples. Crumble the remaining flour mixture over the top.

  6. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.

  7. Let cool completely in the pan before cutting into bars. Drizzle additional caramel sauce if desired after the bars have cooled.

Recipe Notes

Use your favorite type of apple, such as Granny Smith, Pink Lady, Honeycrisp or Fuji.

Homemade or storebought caramel sauce or salted caramel sauce works well.

Ensure the bars are completely cool before cutting to prevent them from falling apart.
