Today we’re sharing a recipe for Homemade Laundry Detergent.  This is a tried-and-true homemade liquid laundry detergent recipe.  It is safe, non-toxic, and free from all the chemicals that storebought laundry detergents are known to have.

All about Homemade Laundry Detergent

We have been making this homemade laundry detergent for at least one year.  We came up with this recipe as we needed a liquid laundry detergent that was safe for our septic system.  It was also important to have a laundry detergent that was easy to make and cost effective.  There are a lot of homemade laundry soap recipes that use expensive and unnecessary ingredients.  It was also important to make one that didn’t have toxic ingredients and was safe for sensitive skin.

This simple recipe calls for a total of 5 ingredients: laundry bar soap, borax, baking soda, laundry booster, and water.  You can make it whatever scent you desire by adding essential oils of your choosing. You will need a pot to melt the bar of soap and mix the few ingredients.  You will also need a large bucket to mix the final product before moving it to jugs for longer term storage.

Ingredients

  • 1 Zote or Fels-Naptha Laundry Bar grated
  • 1/4 cup Borax
  • 1/2 cup Baking Soda
  • 1/2 cup Arm & Hammer Laundry Booster Super Washing Soda

Instructions

  1. Grate laundry soap bar of your choice.

  2. Fill a pot with about 6-8 cups of water and add the grated laundry soap bar.

  3. Heat on medium heat, stirring regularly, and continue to heat until the soap is completely dissolved.

  4. Then add borax, baking soda, and laundry booster super washing soda.

  5. Once all the ingredients are well mixed, remove your pot from the heat to cool.

  6. Once your soap mixture is cool, transfer it to a 5-gallon bucket.

  7. Fill the bucket up with water and let the laundry detergent sit overnight.

  8. The next day, mix the bucket with a paint paddle. We typically use a drill with a paint paddle attachment. Once the laundry soap is mixed well, transfer to jugs or containers for longer term and easier storage.

How long does it last?

We typically store our homemade laundry detergent in old vinegar jugs, and it keeps for several months.  The laundry detergent will separate over time and does need a good shaking the longer the jug sits but it still works completely fine.  We are a family of 5 and do between 1-2 loads of laundry a day and this laundry soap usually lasts us about 3-4 months.  If you did less laundry this laundry soap would probably last much longer.
